For the first time, and hopefully not the last, SEK held an encore performance for the students that participated in District Orchestra. On Saturday February 15, four schools from across Southeast Kansas came together to work on and perform four pieces all in the same day.
Riverton, Pittsburg, Parsons, and Fort Scott sent students that had played at District, and a few students that were nominated by their teacher, to FSCC from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. in order to practice for the concert. The musicians were left in the hands of the Pitt State Orchestra Assistant Professor, Dr. Ramiro Miranda, to prepare the following songs: Tannhauser March, Finale-Serenade No. 9 “Posthorn”, Halcyon, and Blue Rhythmico. At 4 p.m. the musicians performed their encore performance at the Ellis Family Fine Arts Center for family, friends, and community members.
The Fort Scott High School Orchestra Teacher, Mr. Felt, announced his hopes to continue the encore performance in the future. He shared his realization that Orchestra students in the district only get one chance to play with kids from other schools and said that he started this to give them more opportunities. If the future situations provide, students will get this opportunity annually for the foreseeable future.
