“Chappell Roan” is a name not many had heard until early September of this year. Her skyrocket to fame starts with her song “Good Luck, Babe!” breaking into the Billboard Hot 100. Then she became popular on Tiktok for “Casual”, “HOT TO GO”, and “Pink Pony Club.” But where did she start?
Chappell’s real name is Kayleigh Rose Amstutz, but she got her stage name from her grandpa, Dennis Chappell, combined with his favorite song “The Strawberry Roan”. She’s from Willard, Missouri, which is a small town with a population of only about 6,000 people. She started her YouTube channel in 2013 and uploaded videos of her original songs. Then in 2015, she was signed by Atlantic Records when she was only 17. Five years later in 2020, the record label dropped her because she was “underperforming.” (I bet they regret that now!) She is now signed to Dan Nigro’s label Amusement Records.
Although she finally got that big success she was waiting for, it seems to be taking a toll on her mental health. She started receiving backlash on social media for standing up for herself on the red carpet. People on social media had many thoughts on the situation, many said she should stand up for herself and not take the disrespect, while others said it was immature and “just a part of fame.” …That was until she canceled two of her shows to “prioritize her mental health.” This is when people started to change their opinion of her. The stress from the media was getting to her and she decided to voice some things on social media about how she just wanted to go outside without stalkers and be able to hang out with her friends. People did not take this well and said that she shouldn’t have become famous if she didn’t want this to come with it. Many people had a problem with her standing up for herself, but most of those people hadn’t been famous before.
Chappell’s fans, myself included, are excited to see what’s next for her.
