A couple of decades before most of us students were born, pop music was a way for many people to share profound feelings about the world around them. Songs like “Blue Monday” by New Order, and “Never Let Me Down Again” by Depeche Mode can show some of the interesting melody and songwriting of the era. Nobody thought or thinks now that these artists were the best. However, with the rise of more and more modern pop music like Taylor Swift, Sabrina Carpenter, Olivia Rodrigo, Chappell Roan, etc… come the rise of people who believe their preferred flavor of bland is the best thing to ever exist.
Pop music isn’t the worst thing ever, but it’s also not God’s gift to mankind like some make it seem. Pop artists have become commercialized, and for the most part, sterilized. All of the music sounds the same, and the singers themselves tend to sound like other artists who sing identically because that’s what was popular at the time. This, in my opinion, leads to modern music having a much shorter shelf life than other forms of music and even old pop music.
Pop music in the modern era isn’t necessarily a bad thing, people can like what they want. But to me, modern pop is devoid of more complex emotions and nuances that come with daily life. So, in conclusion, modern pop is overrated, overproduced, sterilized, and, to me, just not good enough to warrant listening.
