When was the last time you cheered for a sport other than football or volleyball? Most students only show up when the stands are full, and the game is hype. But what about the quieter nights when athletes still give it their all with barely anyone watching?
School spirit is fading, not because people don’t care, but because they don’t show they care. Unless it’s a “big” game, our student section barely shows up.
At our school’s gym and athletic fields, attendance in the student section has been dropping, especially for less popular sports like tennis and soccer. Many students only attend major games, leaving smaller sports unsupported.
Without a loud, energetic crowd, players often feel less motivated, especially when the team is struggling. The cycle continues as fewer students come to games due to the low energy and excitement, causing the student section to remain mostly empty.
If more students got involved and showed enthusiasm for all sports, it could create a more supportive atmosphere that boosts player morale and strengthens school spirit overall. As coach Vince Lombardi once said, “Individual commitment to a group effort, that is what makes a team work, a company work, a society work, a civilization work.”
If we want to revive the true spirit of our school, it starts with each of us showing up not just for the big games but for every athlete who gives their best on quieter nights. Supporting all teams, regardless of the sport or the size of the crowd, sends a powerful message that we value effort, dedication, and teamwork above all else.
When we fill the stands with energy and pride, we don’t just lift up the players, we strengthen our entire community. Let’s be the generation that changes the game, not just on the field, but in the stands as well, because school spirit isn’t just about the hype. It’s about heart.
